“Hurt” by Nine Inch Nails.
This is a depressing song. It’s the conclusion to the character’s story on The Downward Spiral album, where he’s killed himself because he has absolutely nothing to live for. It’s clearly a very personal song to Trent. The way he sings it on the record with so much pain, it’s fantastic.
Then Johnny Cash covered it. He did a great job. He made the song his own, and made it personal. It feels like he knew he was near the end of his life and it just works so well because it’s so emotionally depressing. You can feel the hurt in his voice.
Now, Leona Lewis covers it. What the fuck does she have to be depressed about? She won that X Factor show a while ago, that must be a hard life. The song means nothing to her, she just sings it. She has a nice voice, sure. But there’s no emotion at all. It’s an emotionally depressing song. She clearly doesn’t understand it. It’s not a nice song to sing, it really isn’t.
I think I rant too much about pointless things.
